Are you running out of room on your shelves? Do you walk by certain stacks and just cringe? We will look at what constitutes current events, and how long something is considered to be politically correct. We work in the oldest community college in the state, and, therefore have the oldest collection of books. We needed to reduce our reference collection and wanted to bring our “fun” books (fiction, short stories and YA) to a much more accessible location. In addition, our library (a member of MNSCU) is going through a change in ILS, so we needed to inventory the entire collection. We had to come up with a plan to accomplish this multi-layered project, and in the process discovered some interesting things about our collection. We will share how we approached our semester-long deselection and shifting and weeding project. We’ll discuss strategies for making successful decisions to enhance and strengthen your collection, while staying true to your institution’s history, and suggestions for moving your collection forward!
