Diversity Salons: A Safe Place to Engage in Challenging Conversations

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

While an institution may not have a formal group charged with developing and implementing diversity programming, diversity programming can still happen, still be impactful, and still further the conversation around this important topic. University of Minnesota Libraries staff members have created Diversity Salons as a low-barrier opportunity for library staff to explore a diversity-related topic in an informal atmosphere and actualize the University's expectation that diversity is everyone's everyday work.  Grounding assumptions are used to ensure that participants are working within a safe space. Each salon incorporates use of popular media such as a book, a Ted Talk or a film as a launching off point to move the group toward a lightly facilitated discussion. This session will describe the origin of the Diversity Salons, program goals, and how-tos.  The session will also provide information about past Diversity Salon media selections and evaluation survey responses.
