Academic research, even at the undergraduate student level, is increasingly data-driven. As a result, effective management of research data is an increasingly important part of a student researcher's responsibilities. Librarians at Macalester College have been working with faculty to develop and incorporate data literacy and management instruction into the undergraduate classroom to help them develop these important skills. This has included the creation of online instruction modules on topics ranging from finding and organizing the research data needed for their project to strategies for documenting and sharing this data. We have also offered course-integrated exercises for getting students to think through and implement good data management practices as well as offering one-on-one "data consultations" or in-class sessions. For academic departments with a strong empirical research component, librarians are working with faculty on implementing the successful Project Tier protocol developed at Haverford College which focuses on the comprehensive documentation of all the steps of data management and analysis that go into an empirical research paper.
